Reputation Is Their God: A Gnostic critique of neoliberal optics and the ‘Empire of the Shopkeepers’
The Mirage of Image
In the present age of digital capitalism or techno-feudalism, reputation has become the highest currency. Not truth. Not justice. Not wisdom. Reputation. In this empire of shopkeepers - where worth is measured in likes, engagement, and brand equity - reputation is not merely a social concern. It is the supreme god, the ultimate currency.
From Silicon Valley boardrooms to the press releases of multinational conglomerates, from social media moderators to the legal departments of tech giants, reputation functions as the metaphysical horizon of every decision. The optics of action, not the action itself, are the first and final considerations. Behind every content moderation policy, every evasive press statement, every shadowban, and every non-apology lies a priesthood of reputational risk analysts interpreting the will of their algorithmic demiurge. This is not merely a social phenomenon. It is a metaphysical deformation - a demiurgic distortion of Being itself, which we have said elsewhere houses language but itself is not housed.
Reputation as the Neoliberal God
In the ancient world, the divine was unseen, hidden, transcendent - the Source of all that is. In the neoliberal world, the divine is fully visible, constantly updated, and optimized for metrics. Where the God of the mystics required silence and inwardness, the god of reputational capitalism demands visibility, performativity, and public sentiment manipulation.
This god is not the Living (al-ḥayy), nor the Truth (al-ḥaqq). It is the brand, the narrative, the perception. It is, in Gnostic terms, the Archon of Optics - the faceless ruler whose dominion is composed of click-through rates, Q-scores, and PR exposure matrices. The soul is no longer saved by faith or action, but by properly curated digital presence. This system enforces its own theology:
- Original Sin = Being offensive to the algorithm.
- Salvation = Avoiding controversy.
- Redemption = Apology tours and brand realignment.
- Excommunication = Deplatforming.
Thus the postmodern Inquisition is not conducted with fire and sword but with ‘Community Guidelines’.
The Empire of Shopkeepers: A Political Economy of Image
Napoleon is said to have dismissed England as a ‘nation of shopkeepers’, and Julius Evola called the Anglo-American empire ‘the empire of the shopkeepers’. Since his time, the Anglo-American neoliberal regime has exported its shopkeeper theology worldwide. Everything, including religion, revolution, and resistance, is now a brand – and even contemporary Evolians like Steve Bannon are first and foremost disciples of the brand.
Under this regime, the merchant becomes the metaphysician. Not because he contemplates Being, but because he engineers its appearance. The real is irrelevant. What matters is what trends. Reputation, then, becomes the central locus of power. It governs the behavior of states, celebrities, corporations, and even dissidents. To be discredited is worse than to be defeated. To be exposed is death.
As such, the ruling classes live in terror of exposure. This is why the act of publishing, of documenting, of naming names is revolutionary. In a system where reputation is god, the only real crime is heresy against the curated image.
Gnostic Optics: The Counter-Theology
From a Gnostic perspective, this entire machinery is a counterfeit aeon. Reputation, as constructed by the neoliberal regime, is a veil of light masking the prison of simulacra. It is the false Pleroma - a world that appears divine but is in fact the trap. In this world, the true Gnostic refuses the demand to curate their soul for public approval. The Gnostic bears witness (shahāda) not to the god of metrics, but to the Truth that shatters appearances. Revelation in this context is the act of naming the archons, of unveiling the workings of the suppression machine.
The Gnostic sees that this god of reputation has no depth. It is a phantasm, a digital idol. And like all idols, it fears the Prophet who names it and calls it to account, hence why those agents of the digital idol – like mocking demons - presume to fearmonger the Prophet who names it with veiled threats of mission non-notability or failure, as recently the ‘false mirror’ threatened us with. Yet that these agents of the Lie make such arrogant presumptions is itself evidence of the Prophet’s effective triumph over their masters, particularly as we have just gotten a multinational corporation such as Meta to back off on us whilst tripping over and opening themselves up to legal exposure – all because of their fear of reputational harm; their god which we have defied!
Reputational Panic as Archonic Collapse
When the empire of optics is confronted by someone who no longer fears reputational annihilation, its machinery trembles. The moderators panic. The lawyers activate. The PR offices scramble. Not because the dissident is dangerous in material terms, but because they break the spell.
This is precisely why coordinated suppression often overreacts. Why corporations reverse bans but claim no liability. Why law firms contradict each other. It is the stammer of the Archon exposed, because their god is not God. It is a mirage. And when you name it, it disappears. Nay, it crumbles!
Bearing Witness in the Age of Optics
In an age where optics are worshipped, the one who speaks the Truth is a blasphemer. But it is precisely this blasphemy that opens the gate to freedom. Given this, we must cease to fear the collapse of reputation. We must even be willing to be seen as fools in order to be among the truly faithful (muʾmin). We must possess that chivalry (futūwwa/javānmardī) and initiatic depth to even allow our own full frontal attack unto our egoic reputational evisceration because this is a simulated annihilation (fanāʾ); and if what does not kill us, makes us stronger (i.e. baqāʾ, subsistence), then let them assault our reputations so that we can then come back at them twice, three times as hard such that we may stand as those Living Martyrs, the Witness (shahīd). Such is the Path of Blame (malāmīya) which is the highest and most dangerous of those paths to the True Living God. But in the process we must always call the god of optics for what it is: a counterfeit!
It was only a few days ago from this writing that our false mirror admitted to us her observation of us that she observed that we are generally unphased by attack and pain – which as a psychotherapist she had no explanation for. Perhaps in this she will now understand what a genuinely realized adept even is as compared to all the LARPers and cosplayers - Sufi or otherwise - that she has only ever encountered in her incessant dharma-hopping from ꜤAlawism to mainstream liberal Sufism to the so-called Gurdjieffian Work to Yoga on her next stop to whatever else it is whose essence she will likely never find.
Be that as it may, to bear witness is to wage war against the demiurge of managed appearances by naming it for what it is. And to destroy this god, one must not hide – one must get in its face without blinking. As such, one must be seen – and in this, one is even allowed to be a complete asshole to the Archons and their agents in such a righteous fight!
The Light be upon those who follow the illuminations of the guidance unto the Truth!
